Enter the first part of a species name in English, Latin, or Cook Islands Maori. Separate different species names with ; (semicolon), eg. starling;flycatcher;kukupa. Separate compound names with * (asterisk), eg. fruit*bat. Case is ignored. More Help

Biological Group

This option lists a few large biological groups. It is useful to restrict a names search, for example try: name=butterfly, without and with BioGroup=Insects and relatives. It is also used in conjunction with the Advanced Search Options below, for example try: BioGroup=Flowering Plants, Origin=Native, and Area=Atiu, to find the "native flowering plants of Atiu". To find a more specific biological group put its name in the textbox. For example: tern, sternidae, grouper, serranidae.More Help

National Presence

This option allows you to select the country along with the extinction status. Currently the Cook Islands is the only available country. More Help

Result Display

Results Per Page: Use this option to split the search results up into pages. A lower value is best for slower connections. Display Style: Changes the way the results are outputted. Namelist display styles are best for slower connections. More Help

Origin

This option allows you to limit the origin of the species you are searching for. You can limit it to Native, Migrants, Introduced and Endemics and options within these categories. More Help

Habitat

This option lets you select the habitiat of the species you are searching for. Options include species from Marine, Land and options within these categories. More Help

Island or Area

The Island or Area option limits your search to a particular island or area where the species occurs. The options below let you specify whether the species is known to be present and possibly present for the selected area.

Known to be present.
Present plus possibly present.

Use or Positive Social Significance

This option lets you find species that have an indicated human use or a positive social significance, for example, medicinal use. More Help

Harmfulnes or Negative Social Significance

This option lets you find species that can cause human harm or a negative social significance, for example, medicinal use. More Help

Endangered

This option lets you find species that have been indicated as endangered and to what degree. More Help

Language Options



				Strict

The traditional Maori, German and French languages contains special characters that indicate alternative pronounciation. You can use the buttons above to easily insert the characters into the search names field. For a description of the character, move your mouse over the character on the button. On Windows based machines, you can also use the Character Map (Accessories > System Tools) program to enter special characters.
