Habitat Z. dipetalum dry to mesic forests, margins of wet forest 260–1280 m (Kaua‘i, O‘ahu, Moloka‘i, Hawai‘i), Z. hawaiiense on lava flows in dry forest, mesic forest 550–1740 m (Moloka‘i, Lana‘i, Maui, Hawai‘i), Z. kauaense mesic forest, sometimes dry to wet forests 300–1980 m (most main islands), Z. oahuense mesic to wet forests 580–800 m (O‘ahu) (Wagner et al. 1990:1213–1216).
