Metal Adzes. This steel adze along with a collection of other things was purchased from Kapulupulu, an old man about 90 years old living in Kawaihae Uka, on January 4, 1888 for $3.00. He lived with his wife in a single roomed grass house free from any foreign notions or luxuries. They were a remarkable couple, keeping their house extremely neat and tidy. When Emerson bought these articles and started to take them away the old woman began to wail at the thought of parting with things they had used for so many years. (Emerson) Length: tip to bevel 8.9 cm; bevel to haft 9.5 cm; bevel depth 0.96-1.27 cm. Blade width: tip 5.4 cm; bevel 6.4 cm; haft 6.4 cm. Straight edge. Handle length 53.3 cm. Bullock-hide lashing. The steel blade was formerly a plane and was secured with lashings of bullock hide. No Figure. (Summers)
