Newa, Pikoi

Material:
 Plant (wood)

Dimensions:
 L: 31.8 cm

Origin:
 Hawaii, Hawaii, Polynesia

Comments:
Ancient newa, uhiuhi palau wood long used by Kawaimaka and his ancestors at Kohanaiki, N. Kona, Hawaii as a club for killing ahi fish as it was pulled into the canoe by the hook and line. It was probably originally used as a club to kill human victims. (Emerson) Length 31.8 cm, head width 12.8 by 5 cm, weight 862 grams. Figure 209. (Summers) Little care was taken to finish its surfaces. This club is minimally well-balanced for which reason subtle actions in a fast and accurate continuous series were not easily made. The transverse peripheral groove in the butt-section of the haft may have served as a seat for a length of cord; but the flange defined at the butt-end serves a s a non-slip grip advantage. (Draeger 1977: OP 2)
