Origin:

Comments:
Pikoi stone bought from M. P. Ailau on October 8, 1886. It came from an old woman in Waimea, Kauai who said that she inherited it from her ancestors. It might have been hurled with a string in a lua. (Emerson) According to Draeger, this weapon is technically a handbolt/pikoi. Length 12.9 cm, maximum 7.6 cm, widht at center 4.3 cm, weight 397 g. Figure 219. (Summers) Fashioned by grinding with care taken to achieve symmetry; proportion indicates its intended use by a person with small hand if applied as a handbolt percussor. This weapon is properly shaped and balanced so as to be useful either as a hand-held percussor, or missile. In the former case it may be used to deliver blows with either end as projects beyond the user's fist, or simply as weighted reinforcement for the pushing or striking another fist. This weapon can serve ideally as a flail or retrievable missile. (Draeger 1977: OP 84)
