 Whalebone Club. Newa palaoa, club of whale bone. Purchased by Emerson October 1, 1887 from Keapokana of Iwilei, Honolulu, Oahu for $1.50. It is an ancient newa that she inherited from her father Kauloaiwi. According to Emerson, this type of weapon was concealed, hung to by neck under the kihei and used to strike a sudden blow. (Emerson) Length 49.5 cm, maximum diameter 3.2 cm. Figure 220. It weighs 496 grams and its center of balance is 28.2 cm from the base end.
