Papale ie. This hat is made of pua ko, sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum) tassel and iwaiwa, maidenhair fern (Adiantum spp.) stems . The stem of the sugar cane inflorescence was stripped, plaited into a long braid and sewn together to form the hat. A scalloped edge was woven on one side of the braid to create the intricate design. A two tone band of iwaiwa and pua ko was incorporated along the base of the crown simulating a hatband.
