Comments:
Model of a double canoe (with sails and paddle) inlaid with pearl shell. This is an example of the Manihiki-style double canoe with the bow and stern attached to opposite ends. Two canoes were probably joined and utilized for a special purpose, then broken down and returned to use as a single outrigger. Its single purpose was to transport populations and goods between the Manihiki and Rakahanga Islands (an approximate 20 mile distance) during an annual migration.
