 Wooden pounder used for pounding steamed rice in a mortar for making mochi (Japanese rice cake). The cylindrical head is made of Java plum wood (Eugenia creminia -- as identified by Rodger Skolmen of U.S. Forest Service Jan.1980) and the long handle is made of guava wood. A white string has been attached to handle at juncture with the head. Made in Hawaii, post-1903. Ref. to Pounder, mochi (1976.280.004), Steamer (1976.280.005 a-f), and Tray (1976.280.008 & 009) used in mochi-making donated by the same donor.
