Comments:
Wooden pounder for pounding steamed rice in a mortar for making mochi. Elongated head; pounding end is larger and circular, other end is smaller and rectangular. A long rounded wooden handle fits into a square hole cut in the mallet head. The wood used for the head is hickory and for the handle, hau (identified by Mr. Rodger Skolman of the U.S. Forest Service, Jan. 1980). The handle is now detached from the head and the wood is split in some places. Made in Hawaii, circa late 1930s-early 1940s. Used by the donor's family. Mr. & Mrs. Okano came to Hawaii as free laborers in 1907, shortly after their marriage, and spent most of their life growing coffee in Kona.
