 Molokai, Hawaii, Polynesia

Comments:
This lei niho palaoa was given to the donor by a woman in Hong Kong in 1963. It was said to have come from a remote burial site on Molokai. It consists of one small walrus ivory niho palaoa, two carnelian, four pink, and thirteen green beads. The pendant is flat and hook shaped with a round suspension hole. The beads are irregular and may have come from China. The beads and niho palaoa were restrung on museum thread in arbitrary sequence by D Jacroux on March 11, 1981. One pink bead was glued together with Elmer's glue, and a chip was also glued onto a green bead. Overall length is 24 cm. Palaoa: 4.5 x 1.45 x 2.5 cm. Beads: 1.1-1.4 x 0.75-1 cm.
