Comments:
This hat is made of lau hala (Pandanus tectorius). The leaves were prepared, stripped and woven as a single piece known as the Kona style. The center of the crown, called the piko, is made up of a rectangular maka moena, check woven, piece. The rest of the hat is woven in the maka oeno twill weave. A band of contrasting material is interwoven around the base of the crown, creating a two tone design. The hat also has a multi-colored shell hatband from Tahiti.
