Papale ie. This hat is made of pua ko, sugar cane tassel (Saccharum officinarum). The stems were prepared, stripped and woven into a long braid, which was then sewn into a hat. The braid is woven in a two tone contrasting geometric design. A brown satin ribbon is stitched to the crown as a hatband. This hat belonged to the late mother of the donors, Helen Poepoe White. Mrs. White was a school teacher and collector of many things. This is one of many things she collected.
