Comments:
This hat is made of iwaiwa, maidenhair fern (Adiantum spp.) stems. The stems were cleaned and prepared. The weaver used the coiling technique with black nylon thread to construct the hat. Two areas of openwork patterning was done on the brim of the hat in a zigzag motif. This hat belonged to the late mother of the donors, Helen Poepoe White. Mrs. White was a school teacher and collector of many things. This is one of many things she collected.
