Papale ie. This hat is made of iwaiwa, maidenhair fern (Adiantum spp.) stems. The stems were prepared and cleaned, woven into a long braid and sewn together to form the hat. The crown is lined with a maroon cloth. Some insect damage is visible. This hat belonged to the late mother of the donors, Helen Poepoe White. Mrs. White was a school teacher and collector of many things. This is one of many things she collected.
