Comments:
 Single-Ended Drum. * black gum. Large, slender, finely hewn drum.Hollowed of round rosewood loa, drum tapers top to bottom. Banded and flared near bottom, drum ends in two large points separated by high graceful arches.Banding is of four carved panels approximately 23 cm. high encircling base above flare; shows well-incised spirit-eye motif of symmetrical, concentric scrollwork.Designs extend to both pointed ends, each with representation of anthropomorphic crocodile head.Carving is excellent. Banding and points painted black. Red pigment used only on one pointed end and one section of band - unfinished? Much liming worn away. Smoothhed wood surface of drum shows fine tool markings; excellent patination. Condition: fair and stable. Side of drum shows serious vertical cracks, 56.5 cm long, extending up from arch at base. Very fine at top, crack expands to .8 cm wide gap at bottom, where large chip of arch is missing as well. Some early attempts at repair are evident. Points at ends of drum are in good condition but painted surfaces show wear from use, some bruising and fine splatter of white paint. Long drip of white paint on drum, small splatter at center, one side. Several small, random paint marks. Tympanum in excellent condition, securely held-staining from gum encircles at top. Large area of reddish staining near top on one side. Excellent patination.
