This hat is made of red lau hala (Pandanus tectorius). The leaves were prepared, stripped and woven as a single piece known as the Kona style. The center of the crown, known as the piko, is made of three piko designs. The hat is woven in maka oeno, twill weave, with six sections of pattern weave; three sections on the crown and three on the brim. Red lau hala refers to the rich brown color of the leaves.
