Comments:
Mahiole made of twined ieie (Freycinetia arborea) rootlets, olona (Touchardia latifolia) cordage, red iiwi (Vestiaria coccinea) feathers and black and yellow oo (Moho spp.) feathers. It is constructed with a high crest. The top of the crest is covered with yellow oo feathers. The sides are predominantly red iiwi feathers with five areas of black oo feathers that line the base of the crest. This mahiole is believed to have belonged to Kalaniopuu, high chief of the island of Hawaii. It was last in the possession of the Lord Elgin of Scotland before it made its way back home to the Bishop Museum. The famed Kalaniopuu cloak is its companion piece.
