General Information

COMMON NAMES: Sandy Prawn-Goby, Fierce Shrimpgoby; French Gobie de Sable

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Panako (AK), Kalaea (TS), Karaea (TW)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE e.Africa - Indonesia - New Caledonia, Cooks (?Disjunct); n. to s.Japan; s. to New Caledonia

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; S.Group - common; N.Group common; Marine, near-shore, lagoon in sandy bottom

KEY FEATURES: To 45mmSL. Pale grey with brown markings. Midside stripe of ~5 dashes, with only 1 spot below near Pectoral. Upperside stripe of spots mainly paired. Dorsal spaced spots. Pectoral to check 3 spots, sidethroat 1-2 spots.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Gold-speckled Shrimpgoby (Ctenogobiops pomastictus) has rather similar markings but has paler markings and a line of small spots below the line of elongate spots.

GENERAL NOTE: Pairs share the tunnel of the snapping shrimp Dark-sided Bullozer-Shrimp (Alpheus djiboutiensis) which has a large dark botch on the side of the carapace, a white saddle on the hindcarapace and a white saddle on the hindabdomen.
