General Information

COMMON NAMES: Prickly Shark, Cooks Bramble Shark; French Squale Bouclé du Pacifique

TRADITIONAL NAMES: Mangō Vena (RR), Mangō Tonu (MT)

GLOBAL DISTRIBUTION: NATIVE GBR - Cooks, Hawai‘i - tropical America; n. to Taiwan; s. to NZ (to 45°S)

COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; Marine, pelagic

KEY FEATURES: To 400cm (usually 200cm). Grey with depressed head, conspicuous lateral line, skin with small starlike denticles (2-4mmØ). Pectorals small; Pelvics large; Dorsal fins small and on hind-half of body; tail dorsal lobe very large, ventral lobe very small. Teeth with wide central cusp pointing to side of head.
