COOK ISLANDS STATUS: Native; PLUS: Listed PL (Anon).; Marine, near-shore; Lagoons and forereef slopes to 30+m. often over sandy areas and in silty areas. Adults generally solitary.

KEY FEATURES: To 75cm SL; lips covering most of dental plates; 1-3 canines on upper plate; tail truncate in ip and lunate in tp. INITIAL PHASE dull yellow-orange with 5 diffuse blue bars (hence the name Bluebarred Parrotfish); whitish ventrally. TERMINAL MALES dark green above and pale below; scales with pink rim or bar; head dorsally green with pink cheek and chin; 2 short blue bands on chin and 3 short green bands behind the eye; Dorsal and Anal fins green with broad central pink stripe; Pectorals blue leading section; tail green with upper and lower pink stripes.

SIMILAR SPECIES: Bluish bars are distinctive on Initial Phases.
