SiteType: OLD MUSEUM SITE NUMBER--0-2. Makaniolu shelter. Cave formed when erosion at the end of ridge opened entrance to lava tube. Cave extends inward approx. 60 feet, maximum width is 18 feet. W side of floor is elevated by a natural ledge which has been developed into a terrace by a process of walling and filling. A small lava tube which emerges just above this shelf, and another which emerges into the back of the main cave, served for storage areas. Break in wall makes window in SW corner. Man-made terrace extends floor in front of the shelter at entrance, which measures 30 feet. Many artifacts. Adult burial proved recent.
