SiteType: Soil profiles exposed in a large gully in Lumaha'i Valley exhibit two layers rich in charcoal. The uppermost charcoal- rich layer was found 0.3m below the disturbed ground surface. The lower charcoal-rich layer was 0.5m below ground surface. It may be inferred that the charcoal-rich layers were deposited as a result of prehistoric forest clearance upslope and up valley from the gully. Charcoal samples from both layers were submitted. The top layer returned a date of 1370 +/- 190 B.P. EXCAVATION. DATING, HRC-328
