SiteType: Kawela Complex Battlefield w/assoc. refuge, burial, and house site/shrine. Summers' sites listed: Site 139. Battlefield: 194 hectares of the flat coastal plain and the area between the bottoms of the E and W forks of Kawela Gulch including ridge separating them. Site 140 A: Puuhonua (Refuge) on the flat top (100 feet wide) of ridge separating E & W forks of Kawela Gulch; within this area are several stone enclosures, Site 140 B. Two adjoining enclosures (heiau?) 22 x 28 feet, and 48 x 69 feet, with walls 12 feet wide. Site 142: House site, 16.5 x 26.4 feet, with attached shrine, 18 x 23 feet. Upright slab is 22 inches high, 14 inches wide, and 6 inches thick. Site 144: Burial mound of warrior, on E portion of Kawela.
