Even though the ‘ukulele is one of the most recognizably "Hawaiian" of objects, it came into existence after Portuguese workers immigrated to Hawai‘i in the late 19th century. The small guitarlike braguinha enchanted Hawaiians who thought that the player's fingers jumped (lele) like fleas (‘uku).
